What’s your strategy for change?

Many of us when we want something to change, look to our external worlds. We want our boss, or partner, or children to act differently. Or maybe it’s our job or financial situation we want to change.

Why do we want change? Because we want to feel better. To feel happier.

When we attempt to change by making the things or people in our world change we don’t tend to succeed. Sometimes it can look and feel like history is repeating itself over and over…. Did you see the movie Groundhog Day? It was only when Bill Murray got that it was him, and not everyone else that had to change, did his world begin to become more of what he wanted.

Have you ever tried to change someone else? Hmm, bet that didn’t work out so well……..

Infact, I bet if anyone has tried to change you, you have resisted or resented it.

To change something in our lives we have to change ourselves. You have the power to change your world, by changing how you think, act, feel and what you focus on.

As Gandhi so famously said, ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world. Why way will you choose

When you begin to change from the inside out, you become more and more aware of the behaviours, attitudes and thoughts that no longer feel right or comfortable for you.

As you begin to change, the circumstances of your life begin to change around you. Maybe people leave or new people arrive. New opportunities and possibilities start to show up.

You may hear yourself telling someone about something that’s going on in your life and, in the telling of it, you realise your story no longer fits. That’s your old story. You’ve outgrown it.

So how can we begin to change from the inside out?

‘If you don’t like something change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” Mary Engelbreit

1. Look at your world. What does it tell you about what you’re choosing as your life?

2. Take responsibility for your life. You cannot change that which you don’t take responsibility for. Stop blaming others. Focus on you. It’s easy to get annoyed at, and blame others. But what part did we play? What did we do or think that contributed to the situation?

3. You create your world with your thoughts, focus, words action and intentions. Your world is as it is, because of the beliefs and stories you hold, about what’s true for you.

It can be difficult to know what our beliefs and stories are because they’re invisible. A question that really works when coaching people is ‘What assumptions are you making here?’ Try it out. It ‘ll point you in the direction of your beliefs. Once you know what it is, you can begin to consciously choose something else.

4. What is it you want to change? If you want more peace in your life – be peace. If you want kindness or love – be kind and loving. Whatever it is you want, be that in your life and your world will begin to change.

5. Ask yourself what you would be doing differently if you had the change you want….. And then start taking small actions to make it happen.

Do something. Be curious and let me know how you get on. I’d love to hear from you.
