Past, present or Future. Where do you live?

So there’s something that’s not working in your life. You want change, but you just seem to keep going round and round in circles. You’ve gone over and over it in your mind, looking to the past to the create the future you want. But it’s just not happening.

Have you heard about black swans?

Let me tell you about them. Prior to 1636 it was believed that all swans were white. So, when European explorers reached Australia,  they were amazed to see black swans – because they didn’t exist. Except they did, because they could see them with their own eyes!

In Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s book The Black Swan, he says that all major events and accomplishments in the world are like black swans. Examples he includes are things like the rise of the internet and September 11 attacks. Events that fundamentally changed how the world operated, but no one saw them coming, or perhaps would have even thought it possible for the world to change in the ways it has.

So why am I telling you this?

Well, just because something hasn’t happened or shown up  in your life doesn’t mean it can’t.

It just means that it’s not happened. Yet. Despite what you may currently be thinking or feeling. Remember those black swans?

Generally speaking we try and create our future by looking to the past.  We project past hurts, stories, labels and experiences into our future.

Except the future doesn’t exist.

All that exists is this present moment. Right here. Right now.

So when we worry about things that haven’t happened – why do we get surprised when the same stuff just shows up over and over in different guises?

You know what I mean. We’ve all done it. Perhaps you’re still doing it? With your relationships, jobs, business, even your body.

But, be kind to yourself. Most of us are doing it. We’re just not aware of what we are doing. We are sleeping in our own lives.

So here’s what I propose. Let’s get radical.

Let’s live in the present. In the NOW. It is your point of power and it is where you can truly create change.

Time is now

Now you may well think you are – but I would challenge you on that.

  • Do you worry about any aspect of your future?
  • Do you beat yourself up with past ‘mistakes’?
  • Do you give yourself and other people labels? I am this…. They are that……
  • Do you feel frustrated, trapped and/or powerless to change?

If you answered yes to any of these, then you’re not using your power.

Living in the past and the future closes you down. It limits what’s possible – because we’re all creators of our own worlds.

So what does this mean for your life?

All change begins with an intention. There’s nothing that has ever been created on planet earth that did not first begin with a thought. A bold claim perhaps. But think about it.

When you truly live in the present moment more and more opportunities and possibilities show up. You become connected to what’s actually going on, as opposed to viewing what’s happening using the lens of the past. Not projecting into the future with the lens of the emotions you are currently experiencing.

Choose Now.

Practice living in the present moment. Every time your mind wanders to the past or the future (which it will – over and over) just notice it and bring your attention back to what is actually happening.

Notice when you decide that something is going to be this or that. Notice when you give people labels. They are just stories – what else could you see if you didn’t have that story? The past blinkers us to the possibilities of the present moment.

Eckhart Tolle has a beautiful quote that I love. ‘Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it.”

How freeing could that be? Stop fighting what it is. Resisting something we don’t want just brings us more of it. Quite simply, because it’s what we’re giving our attention to.

Just decide you are going to choose something different. Know that begins with a decision. Don’t wait for something to show up to believe it. Believe it and then you can allow it to show up. I know it sounds a bit crazy, but it is one of the magical paradoxes of this beautiful planet.

Change happens one thought at a time. One moment at a time.

The black swan exists for all of us.

Connect with your power. NOW.

Drop me a line and let me know what you think. I’d love to hear from you.
