what’s your thinking stopping you from living?

If conforming to the norms of your culture is how you live, and want to live your life, then let me save you 5 minutes – don’t waste your time reading this article. It’s not for you. But if you believe that somehow more and different is possible, then read on my friend.

We all have circa 70,000 thoughts every day.

That’s a lot of thoughts. Some of these thoughts we take more seriously than others.

The thoughts we tend to take more seriously are in areas where we feel like we’re struggling, or our life is not as we would wish it to be. Perhaps for you it is money, health, work, opportunities, struggle, relationships or maybe something else.

‘If you think a thing is impossible, you’ll only make it impossible.” Bruce Lee. Matterhorn

Stop. Read that last quote again and let the words sink deep inside you.

So if something is impossible it can’t be done – right?

But thinking something is impossible is just another thought. However, when we think it and believe it, we create that perception of ‘impossibleness’ in our lives.

So what’s your thinking stopping you from living?

From the moment we arrive on this planet, we learn the ‘rules’ of what we should and shouldn’t do….. What wins us favour and what incurs judgement. But all of this just takes us away from ourselves.

By the time we’re adults, many of us are using most of our energy to conform to the culture and society we’re living in. We all do it. Until we begin to choose something else.

‘To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.’  Emerson

Society defines us with labels. Successful, failure, smart, stupid etc.

We define ourselves with labels. I am this…. but I am not this….. And when we don’t live up to these labels, or we do something different then we can often face judgment from the people around us and often times we judge ourselves more harshly than others.

So, let me ask you a question.

What labels do you give yourself?

Take 30 seconds and write the first 10 words or so that come into your head.

Labels can be really comfortable for us.

But they limit us. Always. They stop us from really ‘seeing’ ourselves.

Labels block other possibilities and I don’t know about you, but possibilities are what makes this life interesting.

So what would happen if you just dumped your labels?

Who would you create yourself as today, knowing that we can re create ourselves in every moment?

‘As you think, so shall you become.’ Bruce Lee.

So play with me for a moment.

Pick two areas of your life. One that works really well for you and one that feels really challenging for you.

Now write down 5 typical recurring thoughts you have for each area.

What differences do you notice between the two lists?

How do the thoughts differ for each area? What’s interesting that you notice??

I wonder what would happen if you started thinking thoughts in the area of challenge similar to the thoughts that you think in the area that’s going well? Just asking.

Let me tell you a story.

There’s a mountain in Switzerland called the Matterhorn. It is 4,478 metres above sea level and looks ferocious, unforgiving and beautiful. Most of us would look at it and say that it couldn’t be climbed and that’s without considering the impact of the altitude on your body. The youngest person to ever climb it was, Kevin Lauber in 1999, who was only 8 years old at the time.

His thinking made it possible for him to do it. It didn’t occur to him that he couldn’t.

How wonderful is that?

Over to you

What could you dare to believe that up until now has felt impossible, that would take you from existing to living?

What you think you create.

What you don’t think you cannot create.

Everything that has ever been accomplished on this planet started with someone’s crazy idea…..an idea that would have been rejected and dismissed out of hand and then ridiculed.

If you arrived on planet earth today and had no  idea of what the rules were what would you create?

What’s your crazy idea?

What thoughts will help take you there?

Life – an adventure or a struggle?
